(8/5/2008) Double Disappointment For Carryduff Footballers

Both the u14 and minor footballers suffered disappointment on Wednesday evening.

The u14 boys finished runners-up in the Down Féile Final in Burren. After the postponement of the Féile last weekend, Carryduff and Rostrevor had to play their semi final match to see who would play Glenn in the final.

Rostrevor made all the early running and had a comfortable 0-09 to 0-02 lead at the interval. The lead was extended shortly after the restart to 8 points but the Carryduff lads dug deep and pulled out 3 goals in the last five minutes to win the tie by a single point.

The Final proved to be a one sided affair as Carryduff had expended so much of their energy in their earlier game. Glenns' fresh legs helped them to a 1-10 to 0-04 victory and the privilege of representing Down in the All Ireland Final.

The Minor footballers suffered heartbreak at the hands of Bredagh in the Championship. A late Bredagh goal, with the tie levelled, saw the Ormeau boys take the plaudits.

(6/5/2008) Double Success for Minor Hurlers

Monday's victory over Warrenpoint not only saw the Club's promotion to the Division 1 league but also means that the minors go directly into the semi final of the 'B' Championship later this year.

The Warrenpoint win was achieved through an all round performance combining hard working team play with excellent spells of flowing skilful hurling.

Warrenpoint had opened the game well and had Carryduff on the backfoot with three opening points from their county player, Micheal 'Meatsy' Cunningham. Despite this pressure, Carryduff didn't panic and Darragh Goodwin opened the home account with a long range point which was quickly added to by Declan Doherty. Mark McConville levelled the scores from a tight angle and then Carryduff's own county star Doherty began to torment the Point defence.

Pinpoint accuracy from frees and outstanding scoretaking from play saw Declan hitting 1-4 without reply. Just before halftime, Eoin Conway broke through for another point leaving the halftime score Carryduff 1-8 Warrenpoint 0-3.

Warrenpoint had the first score of the second half before Carryduff again settled into scoring mode with points from Aaron McEneaney (0-2) and a further three points from man of the match Declan Doherty.

Although the home team were stretching their lead,Warrenpoint were not prepared to lose the promotion slot without a fight and proceeded to notch up five points from frees. At that stage, a goal might have made all the difference to the Point fightback but the Carryduff defence held firm with rock solid displays from Conor Turner, Conor Beattie and keeper Danny Mc Glinchey. Having witheld the pressure, Carryduff went back on the attack and added a late point to leave the final score Carryduff 1-14 Warrenpoint 0-09.

The only sour note of an otherwise excellent evening was the injury to Conal Early who had himself turned in his usual assured performance at centre half back. The rest of the squad wish Conal all the best in his recovery.

(6/5/2008) Ladies Football County Round-Up

Clonduff move to the top of the senior league after their win over Castlewellan Sunday week ago. In a very close encounter the town girls led for long periods before being overcome by a late Clonduff goal. A share of the spoils would probably have been a fairer indication of the teams effort. The town dropped further points against local rivals Bryansford on Saturday night though their next outing against Burren should see them get back on track. A couple of surprise results saw Annaclone topple Bredagh and Downpatrick run rampant against Saval. Looking to this weeks games Bryansford will be on a high after their win over Castlewellan and they could pose some problems for the league leaders Clonduff. Elsewhere Annaclone v Downpatrick should be a close affair.

In the intermediate league Carryduff took the honours in their top of the table clash against Bright. They followed this up with a good win away to Ballymartin to open up some daylight at the top of the table. Bright bounced back against Tullylish but they face a tough game against Ballymartin in their next outing which could go either way. The dark horses in this league could be Rostrevor who have amassed big wins over Loughinisland and Kilcoo and are steadily improving.

Shamrocks lead the way in the Junior league and retain their 100% record. Teconnaught are still their main rivals and are improving with every game. St Johns are battling hard and pushed Shamrocks all the way in their recent league meeting so don't be surprised to see them make progress up the table. The Fin have two big games this week against Clonduff and Shamrocks and we will know a little more about their credentials come Saturday evening.
